Joe Dannis, Founder of DawnSignPress, chatted about inaccurate stereotypes and stigmas with Paralympian, Lacey Henderson in her Picked Last at Gym Class series.
The podcast focuses on the setbacks, struggles and tough moments we all have. In the series, influencers, entrepreneurs, athletes, activists and creatives converse about powering through life’s challenges and finding humor through it all. It’s a show for the underdogs, the ones who made it through the awkward years and came out stronger for it on the other side.
In the podcast, Dannis describes how in the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s Deaf people were told they couldn’t own or set up a business. His parents grew up surrounded with that attitude but encouraged Dannis to follow his dreams. In the 70’s people were more progressive and Dannis was determined to give business a go. DawnSignPress is now a nationally recognized media and publishing house creating quality educational materials in American Sign Language.
